Lachen forms the base to both the Chopta Valley and Gurudongmar Lake. A yak race, the Thangu is held at Lachen annually during the summer.

Namchi, the district headquarters of south Sikkim district is fast becoming a major tourist spot and pilgrimage centre. The Namchi Monastery, Tendong Hill and Ralang Monastery are some of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage centers. The world’s largest statue of Padmasambhava with a height of 118 feet , also known as Guru Rinpoche who is the patron saint of Sikkim, is located on the Samdruptse hill opposite Namchi. It is also said that the Samdruptse hill is a dormant volcano and that the Buddhist monks have been going on top of the hill and offering regular prayers to the volcano to keep it calm. There is also a Rock Garden which is located just few kilometers up from the town on the way to Samdruptse. The Rock Garden has a wide range of Flora and is a local picnic and recreation spot which offers a magnificent view of Mt. Kanchenjunga which is the world’s third highest peak.

Also called as Ipecac Garden, the saramsa garden was established by the Forest Department of the government of Sikkim 1922 to cater to the needs of the British officers and the former Namgyal Royal family. Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary which covers 31-sq.km of land lies at an altitude of around 3200 to 4200 meters. Situated 30 km away from Gangtok, it offers a beautiful view of Khangchendzonga peak. Though the high altitude of the sanctuary may be physically challenging for some, the breathtakingly beautiful snow-clad mountains elevate your spirits to a whole different plane. Trekkers frequent this part of Sikkim for the challenge it offers and nature lovers adore this sanctuary for its rich variety of alpine flowers like rhododendron, primulas and magnolias. The Ganesh tok which is dedicated to the lord Ganesha is a small temple which can accommodate only a few people at a time. To enter the temple, a person needs to go down on all fours.
