Over the decades, we have seen a transition in hairstyles, changing from the confined and conservative styles of the Victorian era to more looser and fuller hairstyles. Curiously, the volume became the theme irrespective of long and short styles. The bob became one of the controversial haircuts of the 20th century, and more youth were drawn to this because of the free-spirited style. It led to different types of cuts and short hairstyles, the plain bob, shingle bob, orchid bob, Moana bob, coconut bob, Eton bob, and Charelston bob, etc. The 1960s led to the distinct Beehive hairstyle that was hive-shaped, the Inverted bob with long hair, with a middle parting. Bouffant was another style where hair styled to puffed out in round shape with curled ends.
In the 1980s, the hairstyles were divided into two categories, the easy to care style and high maintenance ones. Some hairstyles relied on hairspray and hairstyles like perm, as well as short, layered haircuts. There were side ponytails with feathered bangs and layering of hair over the entire hair set with rollers with a bit of teasing to create an illusion of height. In the 1990s, the long hair was still sought after, but the styles were more natural-looking with highlights. There was a re-emergence of old hairstyles in both short and natural long hair. Indian hairstyles had several variations in the form of braids and updos for both long and short hairstyles. Today, the number of styles to choose from is endless. There are styles irrespective of the length of hair for both men and women. There are teen hairstyles, and kids’ hairstyles, straight and curly hair, have a different variation of hairstyles to choose from. Men are not far behind as they have umpteen ways to style their hair and fashion their beards too!
