In 1907 when two 12-year old’s went in search of their cricket ball, little did they know that they would stumble upon one of nature’s spectacular creations. The Crystal Cave in Bermuda initially discovered by Carl Gibbons and Edgar Hollis was further explored by the Wilkinson family, owners of the property, after learning of the great discovery. The most spectacular of all caves have to be the Cave of the Crystals located in Chihuahua, Mexico. Lying 300 metres below the surface, the main chamber contains never before seen giant crystals the size of pillars. Some of them reach heights of up to 11 metres and weigh about 55 tons. Formed from magma below the cave, these crystals are said to be as old as 500,000 years. Conditions inside the cave are extreme which calls for proper gear when visiting this behemoth structure.

The Crystal Cave at Put-in-Bay, Ohio is a limestone cave that houses the world’s largest geode or crystal structures. The cave was discovered in 1887 by German-born Gustav Heinemann when digging a well beneath his winery. The oversized crystals found on the cave walls were initially used for mining purposes. The cave was later converted into a tourist spot where Celestine crystals, as they are termed, measuring 3 feet in width can be seen lining the limestone cave walls.
