How to Make Almond Flour

Preparing almond flour at home is a pretty easy. In fact, almond flour prepared at home is a lot cheaper and better than the almond flour purchased directly from your local store.

There are some reasons why you need to prepare almond flour at home. For those who are health conscious, almond flour is gluten-free and high in protein. Almond also has the properties to bring down your cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart diseases. To top all of that, almond flour is also really rich in taste, making it an ideal ingredient for baking purposes.

You will find the use of almond flour in some baking recipes, like cakes, muffins, cookies and pancakes. You can also use almond flour as a substitute for other flours in certain recipes, owing to its health benefits and richer taste.

How to Make Almond Flour

One must, however, note that almond flour must be consumed in moderation if you are trying to lose weight. Despite all the health benefits almond has, it is not the ingredient you want to go overboard with when trying to lose weight.

Here are the steps to prepare almond flour at home in a quick, easy and inexpensive way –

Step 1 – Blanch The Almonds:-


The idea behind blanched almonds is basically that, the skin of the almonds must be removed. Removing the skin of the almonds will give you a more even textured and even coloured almond flour.

Using raw almonds is not a complete no-no, but blanched almonds are recommended for better results and taste.
Almonds without the skin are also available in the market, but it is best to blanch the almonds at home. This will be less expensive, and will also ensure that you have a fresher batch of skin removed almonds.

How to Blanch Almonds:

Boil the almonds in water for around two minutes. Once the almonds cool off, remove the skin and dry the almonds of all the water. Wet will lead to almond butter if used.

Step 2 – Grind:

Pour out the skinned and dried almonds into your grinder and grind it. Run it till the time you are satisfied with the texture of the flour. The texture of the flour will, of course, depend on your recipe, and how you will be using it.


Ensure that you don’t run them in the grinder for too long at a time. Run it only for a few seconds at a time for best results, and to avoid for the almonds to release oil. If there is any other flour or sugar required in your recipe, add some of that while you grind the almonds. This will reduce the risk of releasing almond oil.

Step 3 – Seal and Store:


Pour out the freshly prepared almond flour in an air tight container and seal it. Store the container in a refrigerator when not in use. The flour must be kept under cold temperature and in a dark place to keep it good.

It must be noted that almond flour has a shelf life of about 4-6 months when refrigerated. After this time span, do not use the almond flour, and prepare a fresh batch. However, if you store the flour in the freezer, it may last for up to one year. If frozen, you will need to bring the quantity required at room temperature, before using it.

The quantity of the almond flour you want to prepare must be decided to keep its shelf life into consideration. It is recommended to prepare the fresh flour for every single use, if that is a feasible option. This will help retain the flavour the aroma of the flour.
