Headache is the most common reason; why people go to see a doctor. Most women have tension headaches and they end up giving the men headaches. It is the reason 127 million people miss work.

Headache Types and Locations:

The head can pain differently from person to person. It could be frontal, back, forehead, facial or head. The pain can be of any magnitude. Normally it is less in the beginning and keeps increasing with time if untreated. If headache prevails for a longer duration then you should see a doctor.

Also, headache with other symptoms like cold, running nose, muscle stiffness, fever, diarrhoea, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting need to be checked. You must visit a doctor if it remains for a longer duration as it could mean some serious disease.

It is mainly due to the nerves spread over the brain. It is spread over the head and face. It could also be because of muscle pain and blood vessels. This makes every type of headache different. Thus, every person can have different types of headaches due to many reasons. The types of headaches are as follows.

Primary Headache:

Headaches that have no cause or condition is called primary headache. It is a common type of headache. This type of headache is very mild and is of short duration. A simple rest or a cup of tea is enough to cure it.

Secondary Headache:

A headache that has reason and condition is called a standard headache. It could be a disorder or injury. This type is longer and more painful. You can take medicine and cure it.

Cluster Headache:

Headaches that come in groups are called cluster headaches. It lasts for weeks and months. It is more common in men and women. This type of pain is one side. It is more excruciating and non-throbbing. It has two types. Episodic cluster headache is a longer headache. It can last from two weeks to years. It comes with a short period of break. Cluster chronic headache is no break headache. It stays for months to years. It is continuous and can be very annoying to carry on with life.

Sinus Headache:

The sinus is an air passage that surrounds the eyes, nose and cheeks. This cavity can cause pain and cause sinus headaches. This causes the cavities to swell and become clogged with mucus. The pain can be frontal and facial. It is deep and throbbing. The face feels tender to the touch. It gets worse on bending or lying down. It can be confused with ear pain or dental pain. A cold and runny nose accompanies it. It can cause fever also. It is often confused with migraine.

Tension Headache:

Tension headache is the most common type of primary headache. It is called a stress headache. It creates pressure in the head, front of the face and back It makes the person sensitive to light and sound occasionally. Tension headache often leads to sleeping disorders. It has three types, namely infrequent episodic tension headache, frequent episodic headache and chronic headache. Infrequent episodic headaches can occur once a month. Frequent episodic headache is a headache every 2 to 15 days. It can be hourly. The pain is severe in this type, with chronic tension headaches every 15 days. It is felt on both sides. The scalp becomes tender; they are more painful.

Spinal Headache:

Anyone who has had a spinal tap that is a lumbar puncture develops a spinal headache. A spinal tap involves the removal of spinal fluid for any test or procedure. Lumbar puncture is injecting anaesthesia for conducting any procedure. An epidural block is given in the spine during labour and C-section. After the procedure, the fluid of the spine leaks out causing changes in fluid pressure. This change of pressure results in headache. it happens after 5 days of the procedure. The pain is more while sitting. It is best to avoid any such procedures. Also, you must not lift weights and take maximum rest to avoid leakage of spinal fluid.

Exertion Headache:

After doing a strenuous physical activity, sometimes you get headache. This is called exertion headache. it is seen in mostly younger people below 50 years of age. When you do any heavy exercise or activity, your heart beats faster to provide continuous demand for oxygen in your blood. This increase in blood pressure is not just in the body; it is in the brain too. This is called venous pressure. Mostly this headache is primary. It ends with the end of the exercise. You may want to have juice to get the pressure normalized.

Hypertension Headache:

Hypertension means an increase in blood pressure. This is usually due to family history or stress. These cause headaches in some people. There is no guidance to find its symptoms. Just a proper diet and a healthy lifestyle are advised to the patient.

Tumor Headache:

As the name suggests, a headache due to tumour leads is called a tumour headache. A tumour is a group of abnormal cells growing in the brain mass. When the tumour is small, it doesn’t put any pressure on the brain. As it grows it starts to add pressure. This starts with pain in the head. Normally there is dizziness, lack of coordination and a reduction in the ability to see, hear and talk. You must check on a doctor when such symptoms start to increase.

Post Traumatic Headache:

Post-traumatic headache is the pain of the head after any accident or injury. This is for a shorter duration. It is also not more than a week. Normally you would be given a painkiller by the doctor.
