The purpose of makeup is to enhance outer beauty in the form of cosmetics for eye and lip makeup. The first use of prototype cosmetics can be traced right back to the ancient Egyptians, as many Egyptian tombs contained makeup kits and canisters. The earliest record of the application of cosmetic substances goes back to Circa 2500 and 1550 B.C up to the Indus valley civilization. There is evidence of highly advanced ideas of the beautification and use of a vast array of cosmetics by men and women in ancient India. Advancements in industry and fields of chemistry and medicine in the 18th and 19th centuries brought significant improvements in cosmetics.

The establishment of many of the present-day makeup manufacturers was during the 1920s and 1930s. During this time, lipsticks were one of the most popular cosmetics of this time, followed by rouge and powder. The lip gloss is a time of was invented by a company called Max Factor in 1930, and makeup was created exclusively for actresses in black and white films. A huge change took place, and there was a departure from traditional style in the 1960s to 70s with the hippie movement leading to natural-looking cosmetic, punk with a darker and sinister style that was aimed to shock and glam that was a more extravagant and colorful style. These then led to the emergence of many new techniques that changed fashion to its current state.

Some of the oldest brands of cosmetics are Ponds, Yardley has been around since 1770, Vaseline, Elizabeth Arden, L’Oréal Paris, Nivea, etc. Advancement in the field of makeup has led to the development of vegan and cruelty-free makeup products like Dermablend, Pacifica Plushious Mineral Lipstick, Aveda Petal Essence Eye Color Trio, Urban Decay Brow Tamer Flexible Hold Brow Gel, Kat Von D Beauty Tattoo Liner, Tarte Pearly Girl Vegan Teeth Whitening Pen, etc. It is fascinating to see how makeup trends in the form of nail art, like fashion, tend to re-emerge once every 10, 20, or 30 years since the beginning of the 20th Century.
