Receding hairline is the cause of concern for many of us. Hair loss due to ageing and medical treatments like chemotherapy is temporary and does not require any treatment. However, hair loss at an early age can be embarrassing and a major setback for your confidence level. These hair losses can be triggered by anything from scalp infection to unhealthy lifestyle and eating habits. Hair growth therapies are an excellent way to control this underlying problem and prevent further damage.

Different Hair Growth Therapy Treatments:

Below are some effective hair growth therapy treatments that prevent hair loss and infuse new hair growth.

1. Stem Cell Therapy:

Stem Cell Therapy is a scientific approach to treat hair loss problems. This therapy treats the follicular stem cells to stimulate hair re-growth, which is then multiplied and ultimately re-implanted on the scalp. This procedure is also known as Hair Multiplication or Hair Cloning. Previously, the bald section of the head was considered devoid of any follicular cells. However, repeated research and studies have shown that the follicular stem cells are only dormant. This therapy triggers these dormant follicular stem cells, and through hair multiplication, hair is regenerated. Stem Cell therapy is still under research and clinical trials, and the success rates will increase with time.

2. Low-Level Laser Therapy:

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is an excellent hair growth therapy for hair loss. LLLT laser light is used to stimulate hair growth, and a light-emitting device or LED is used to expose the laser to bald areas. The light of a specific wavelength is exposed for a prolonged duration to promote hair re-growth. On absorbing the laser light, the energy of the hair tissue molecules is considerably increased, and the ‘excess energy’ triggers adaptive changes. To get better success results, there should be 3-4 sessions of LLLT every week, with each session lasting a minimum of 25 minutes. This should be done for nearly six months, after which just a few maintenance sessions must be done.

3. Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy:

Platelet-rich plasma Therapy, or PRP, is another amazing hair growth therapy that can yield remarkable results. In this therapy, blood is collected from the patient and then centrifuged to collect plasma with platelets. This platelet-rich plasma is rubbed or injected onto the scalp to promote hair re-growth. PRP requires 8 sittings with two sessions every week for good success rates. Some doctors alternate PRP with stem cell therapy to get better results.

4. Immunotherapy:

Immunotherapy is another effective hair growth therapy to treat extensive or complete hair loss problems. In this kind of therapy, a chemical solution known as Diphencyprone (DPCP) is applied to the bald skin, covering smaller sections each time.

This treatment is repeated each week, and the dose of DCPC is gradually increased. The chemical solution instigates an allergic reaction on the skin, and the treated section develops mild dermatitis or eczema. In a few cases, this triggers hair re-growth after 12 weeks.

During DCPC treatment, is it required to wear a scarf or hat for almost 24 hours to protect the treated area from light reactions? This Immunotherapy treatment also has certain side effects, such as severe skin reactions, vitiligo or rashes. These can, however, be avoided by gradually increasing the DCPC concentration.

5. Ultraviolet Light Treatment:

Phototherapy or Light therapy using Ultraviolet rays also treats hair loss. Here, the bald skin is exposed to UVA or UVB rays. This therapy is done at the hospital and requires 2-3 weekly sessions. Before starting the treatment, the patient is prescribed psoralen, a medicine that makes the skin sensitive to Ultraviolet light.

Phototherapy takes almost a year to witness remarkable hair growth; the results are varied and often poor. This hair growth therapy has some side effects, like skin pigmentation, nausea and increased susceptibility to skin cancer.
